TravelSMART community event a huge success

by CllrZoeFranklin on 20 February, 2013

On Saturday I attended the TravelSMART community event at Guildford Children’s Centre, Hazel Avenue. Invitations had been delivered to every home in Stoke and Stoughton and I was utterly delighted by the turn out – 86 residents, plus numerous interested observes packed out the main hall.

Proceedings were opened byour local County Councillor Pauline Searle who introduced the wonderful Bellfields Community Choir who sang a number of songs to an enthusiastic audience. We then moved on to a series of 3 minute presentations from every group that was submitting a bid for funding. Following all the bids we were guided through a period of voting where we could rate each group/bid out of ten.

At the end of the voting local people decided that all of the bids deserved the money they had asked for and County Councillor Pauline Searle handed out the confirmation slips in gold envelopes adding to the oscar-like feel to the proceedings. I would say that there was no question that overall winner in terms of public support was 2nd Guildford Scouts hotly followed by most of the other bids that supported work with local young people!

I was also pleased to hear that TravelSMART will be able to fund projects for an additional two years so I would encourage any local group that thinks they fit the criteria (visit the TravelSMART website for more info) to put in a bid for the next round of funding.
