A Government-backed scheme called the National Citizen Service has released thousands of places for 16 and 17-year-olds across England to go on a two-week residential course (but can vary). It includes activities like canoeing, climbing and hiking followed by a team project to help their community. The residential part usually lasts around two weeks, then there’s 30 hours of social action projects in your local community.
Enter your details on the National Citizen Service page (follow the link above) to take part. The cost is capped at £50 (some will be less) and includes food, transport and equipment. There’s also a bursary scheme which will enable some people to go free.
You must have turned 16 or 17 by 31 Aug 2013 and it doesn’t matter if you’re at school or not. There’s no official end date, but NCS recommends you book as soon as possible as places are limited. For full info on how the scheme works, check out the FAQS section of the NCS website.
